M2 MacBook Air Back to School Gift Card to Purchase Applecare?

I did a search, but seems there is conflicting info. Has anyboy had success purchasing AppleCare after the fact for their MacBook using the gift card from the back to school promo?

I tried using an apple gift card obtained from a trade in to do this and was unsuccessful. The checkout process for apple are did not offer a payment method to enter a gift card. I think this is on purpose to avoid using the card for applecare and instead to point people to more expensive devices to cover part of the price.

Doesn't it charge your account balance? Just add the gift card to your account

You can use a gift card for AppleCare but only in a Apple Store
