OK, so I actually know how to turn it off from the Apple logo or power switch. The problem is that it turns itself on if I open the screen or touch a key or the trackpad. Since I am getting ready to replace the trackpad, I want to turn it off so that it will not power back on unless and until I hit the power button, so I am assured that it is off and STAYS off when I open the case up. What is the trick? Why is this so hard?

Disconnecting the battery cable is part of the procedure. But I don't want to do that while the MBA might be powered up. This is all new and weird to me. Every other laptop I have owned only behaves like this when it is in sleep mode. IOW, off is off and you need to hit the power button to start up again.

It seems the only way is to disconnect the battery cable.

Yeah, I get that. But the "official" instructions have the screen open and hanging off a table. You'd have to turn it off and then be very careful not to bump a key or the touchpad which would just turn it back on. Still very odd that we have no way to turn these damned things off. I am still in a little disbelief that it is so.

Follow the iFixit steps for trackpad replacement. If you do those steps, you will safely disconnect the battery, which is your method for removing power. (Note the step: "Keep the lid closed until you've physically disconnected the battery.")

And I am probably going to jinx myself by saying this, but that little application of silicone has eliminated the oversensitivity problem, at least for now.

But, if you already know that opening the lid will respond with power on, then your first goal is to disconnect the battery. Power can't respond further when the battery is disconnected. (Who cares about "official" instructions? iFixit steps are pretty good about taking you through--well-- you know, the steps.) If you know that power should be disconnected, then that should be your goal at the beginning of the repair. Be safe!

As others have said many have written on this, myself included. It is impossible to use the redundant power button as a power button. The laptop does shut down but any key or any opening of the screen will turn it on. Extremely annoying.

I don't mind so much the turning on when the lid is opened but the any key when you try to clean your keyboard is really a Pain!. I shouldn't have to download an application to turn off my keyboard so I can clean it.....

That being said you may have more control with other types of laptops but not a better laptop.

No turning things off. Big Brother doesn't like that.

I forget if the power state is triggered by the hinge or the display magnets. If the latter, you could try some thin magnet strips along the palm rest.
