Hello! I'm trying to learn how a top-line M3 Max chip (16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores) compares to a baseline M4 Max chip (14 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores).

With the increase in power for the M4 line, is that particular lower-spec M4 Max chip the same power as the beefed up M3 Max chip? Or stronger? Or weaker?

Thanks!

Thanks...but I prefer to interact with human beings. Especially since AI is often not a reliable source.

You could have also just done a search for reviews comparing the M3 Max to an M4 Max - those will often be more informative, and are what most people here would refer you to anyways.

Yeah it's not perfect, but it's come a long way!

Here's chatGPT to your initial post:

The M4 Max chip with 14 CPU cores and 32 GPU cores generally outperforms the M3 Max chip with 16 CPU cores and 40 GPU cores. This is due to architectural advancements and efficiency improvements in the M4 series. Apple claims that the M4 Max delivers 1.2 times the performance of the M3 Max.

Therefore, despite having fewer CPU and GPU cores, the M4 Max's enhanced architecture allows it to surpass the M3 Max in overall performance.

M4 is 4.5GHz, while M3 is 4.1, a difference of around 10%. Looking at GB6 scores, M4 Max is 25% higher than M3 Max in Single Core as well as in MultiCore for the same core count; the 14 core M4 Max is about 20% faster than the 16 core M3 in MultiCore. Metal scores for M4 are about 20% higher than M3 for the same core count.

For whatever GB is worth.

To offer a serious comparison we'd need to know exactly what you'll be using it for.
