This is a weird one. When I shut down my M3 MBA, using the proper Shut Down command, then close the lid as soon as it's completely shut down, it continues to consume battery as if I'd only closed the lid and put it to sleep, without the actual Shut Down command. And it seems to vary how fast it runs down - just checked now, and after about a week and fully charged when shut down, it's at 39%. I've had other times where 3 days later it's dead as a fart.

Any idea what could be going on here? Never had this issue with my previous M1 MBA.

Do you have any external accessories connected to your machine? They should not consume power when shut down, but maybe they during the shutdown. I have some external SSDs that will consume a lot of battery power.

i dont even shut down my m2. I just close it and let it sleep and it will be fine for weeks that way. Definitely something going on with yours. Shouldnt even need to shut it down. Mine loses 1% overnight in sleep mode

Nothing connected to it, and it SEEMS to actually shut down - i.e. that last slight glow of the screen vanishes about 5 seconds after it initially goes dark, just like every past MB I've had including the M1. Really a strange one, I'm out of ideas.

Force power off, by pressing & holding Touch ID for 10 seconds until it turns off. Then immediately close the lid & see what happens after a couple of days.

If it's no longer draining after doing that - it's not shutting down properly; some software issue. You could isolate by testing in a new user or using Safe Mode, etc.

If it IS still draining when doing that then.... dunno. Abnormal for sure.

Makes sure Wake for Network access is turned off.

On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Battery in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Options on the right, click the pop-up menu next to “Wake for network access,” then choose an option. Click Done.

Thanks. It was set to "only on power adapter" but I turned it off completely. Also, it hadn't been powered on in a week, and I still had 80% battery, so it didn't totally drain, if at all (not sure what it was at when last shut down). The mystery continues. Or maybe it won't happen again? Who knows.
