Amazon has the iMac available at a discount, so if you're thinking about getting a new desktop machine for back to school, make sure you're not paying full price.

Apple's base M4 iMac with 8-core CPU is available for as low as $1,149 from Amazon, down from $1,299. That price is only for the pink version, and you'll have to pay around $1,185 for the other colors.

The higher-tier M4 iMac with 10-core CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD is available for as low as $1,365, down from $1,499. Some colors are a little more, but discounts on all shades except for orange and yellow are over $100.

The M4 iMac with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD is also on sale, with Amazon dropping the price as low as $1,542, down from $1,700. The version with 24GB RAM and a 512GB SSD is $1,716, down from $1,900.

Need to bring back the $799 eMac
This version of iMac should really be the new eMac while the iMac should get update to 27” or even a 32” / 6k option. I do love the iMac as a shared family computer with kids, but its really hard to justify over a Mac Mini + any monitor you want combo. And for crying out loud , bring back target display mode Apple! 😭

Love my ultimate yellow M4 iMac. Studio Display + Mac mini can't touch the simplicity of this setup!
But your iMac can't touch the performance of the Mac mini Pro setup...

It's all a matter of personal tastes of course. While I agree that the iMac is the more elegant solution, I always thought Apple would at least offer options with a pro chip or even a Max one in it to make a new "iMac Pro".

It seems like they have decided to bring the iMac back to it's orignal low end entry level rank just like it was when it launched in 1998.

PSA: the base unit iMac (8CPU/8GPU/16GB/256GB) includes a keyboard without Touch ID. Please consider carefully buying this model (or recommending it to anyone). There is no magic in a "magic keyboard" without Touch ID. You can buy a keyboard with Touch ID later, but the cost will be essentially equal to the upgrade cost of the 10/10/16/256 version. You're welcome.
Apple knows all there is to know about upselling, that's for sure!

It's useful to note when Apple's starter products are functionally deficient for a large swath of users. An iMac would be great as a home computer for seniors, but the absence of Touch ID severely cripples that usability. I fondly hope that Apple Marketing sees discussions like this and makes Touch ID ubiquitous in all products that bundle a keyboard.
