Apple today introduced new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips. Although these computers were just announced, Best Buy is already providing early pre-order discounts exclusively to My Best Buy Plus and Total members at up to $150 off.

Best Buy also has numerous 16-inch M4 Pro/M4 Max models on sale, including the 16-inch M4 Max MacBook Pro (16-core/1TB) for $3,849.00 for members, down from $3,999.00.

The new M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models feature a minimum of 24GB of Unified Memory, as well as three Thunderbolt 5 ports. All models of the computer include an improved Liquid Retina XDR display, new 12MP Center Stage camera, improved battery life, a MagSafe 3 port, a headphone jack, and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

That was fast. Must not be selling well hence the discount... or so I've been told by people here on MR when Apple products go on sale.

Pay for a Best Buy Plus ($49.99/yr) or Total ($179.99/yr) membership to save $50 🤣

Just buy it for $1,499.00 from Apple Education store. Sheesh!

If you purchase often at Best Buy, the memberships are worth it. Especially for large appliances, home theater equipment, other big ticket items.

I worked at Best Buy for over three years. These “deals” are a waste of time. Almost all of my Apple sales would begin with (older) customers not realizing that the sale includes a $180 (formerly $200) yearly subscription to BBY. And, coincidentally, returning a year later to be told that we won’t cancel the membership in store - as it would negatively affect our KPIs.

My coworkers would often confuse themselves when explaining Total/Plus to a customer, and crucial details about the membership would be obfuscated or forgotten entirely. Unless you shop at Best Buy a lot, this is not a real discount.

The transition to BBY Total cut back on these benefits a lot, especially for home theater and appliance installs.

I thought Apple held very close control on 3rd party pricing but the last 5 years have seen that completely change. Like MacMall (a printed magazine Apple reseller) used to advertise maybe $10 less than Apple.com but these are pretty significant.

Bestbuy and Amazon undercutting Apple then adding on AppleCare for free (if you’re a member) has convinced me to stop buying anything from Apple except built to order Macs (such as a laptop with more than 1TB of storage).

To those hating on Total Tech, it really depends on what kind of spending you do. It’s $179. This year we purchased 2 watches, 1 iPhone, 2 iPads, MacBook Pro and an AppleTV oh and 2 HomePods. The monthly AppleCare price exceeds $179 a year and that’s before they replaced a GoPro that stopped working ($400), installed a dozen screen protectors on our devices ($8 if you’re note a member) and installed 2 dashcams for me for free.

I used to AppleCare everything I owned but now BestBuy covers that for a flat $179 a year. BestBuy’s member dashboard says I’ve saved $650 on service and $1608 in protection plans since I joined 2 years ago And $728 on member exclusive discounts.

If you buy a Mac every 5 years and pay for total to get a discount on that one purchase, then yeah it’s a bad deal.

looks like Best Buy is has not got the 1tb configurations up yet for the base 16 inch MBP Pro. only 512

Is it indefinite apple care as long as you keep the membership (180) a year or does it tops off at two years?

Maximum of 2 years, paid Monthly by Best Buy so long as you keep your membership with an offer to convert to monthly billed to you via BestBuy.com at the end. When my Ultra 1 was expiring, they informed me 30 days in advance and said $5.99 if I want to continue coverage.

At least with B&H Photo & Video, you can get BTO Macs, and if you use their affiliated PayBoo credit card, the sales tax gets discounted. No annual fee. Of course, if your sales tax is 6%, for example, and your regular credit card gets 1.5% cash back, then you're effectively netting 4.5%. If you use Apple Card for 3% off on Apple products from Apple, then you save an extra 3% net.

My point is, you can still come out ahead by a bit. I haven't bought a lot from B&H, but I've bought occasionally over the years, and my experience was quite good.

This is good to know, every time i asked a BestBuy employee, they told me 2 years then it terminates with no way to go to month. The ability to go to month to month is a tempting.

I think Best Buy’s Total Membership is a decent value. I have ordered appliances and TV’s with Best Buy removing, recycling, and installing them for me and my parents at no additional cost. Additionally any Apple device purchase automatically gets Apple Care.

Actually, this used to be the issue. About a year ago, plans were just expiring with no email prompting me to continue. My iPhone 14, Ultra 1 and MacBook Pro M1 all three prompted me to renew so I think this is a new enhancement.

Here’s what it looks like:

And the link takes you to the plans page and a big “renew” button that bills your card on file monthly (BestBuy bills you, not apple) and I extended one month then cancelled online and didn’t have to call anyone so it’s pretty easy and not a hassle. But if you let it lapse, there’s no adding it back later.

I always find it kinda funny to see people to rush and buy this day-of launch when it'll be like $250 off by Black Friday and only further discounted from there.

Fair point, but how long do you want to wait to get it? If someone orders a build-to-order Mac Mini today, for example, I wonder how long until they actually get it? How big of a backlog will there be? And will it be even worse on the more popular MacBook Pros?

Ditto this. Plus, BestBuy consistently has better trade-in prices than Apple. BTO is the only reason to buy at Apple. With the base RAM being bumped up across the board, BTO not something many need to do.
