Plugging my M1 MacBook into my HDR monitor via HDMI results in terrible banding. Posts on the net suggest this is a common issue

Does the M4 Mac Mini have this problem?

Can you output HDR on the new Mac Minis?

Sonoma M1 Air does HDR just fine to Dell 6K (DP or Thunderbolt) or LG 34" 5k2k (Thunderbolt). I have never tried HDMI with either. Some applications have strange issues with HDR, but VLC playing a local file always seems to work well.

MacOS 4k HDR suffers from noticeable color banding. Even in the interface (wallpaper for example)

Using a LG C2 4K OLED and I have to turn off HDR to get rid of the banding.

Quick google seems to suggest this is a common issue on older apple silicon chips so was wondering it was an issue with the new M4 also

I have only experience with a "4K" UHD (native Resolution 3840x2560) display on my M3 iMac.

It is depending on the refresh-rate and resolution if I can enable HDR at all when it's connected via DisplayPort 1.4 to a TB4 Dock and before with a USB-C cable, that claims to be "fully featured".

But somehow it worked only on Thunderbolt ports, directly or dock. Is DisplayPort is still integrated in Thunderbolt? standard USB-C 3.x Gen2 ports don't work at all they are either too slow with 10Gbit/s or don't include DisplayPort.
Maybe it's a real USB 4 cable with 20 Gbit/s.

In the beginning I used it with HDMI. It has even two connectors (2.0 and 2.1), but both didn't give me more than 60Hz. But HDR also worked there . Does HDMI even work with a higher refresh rate than 60Hz? The HDMI cable that came with one of my docks and is even labeled. Both other coonection methods can go up to 144Hz.

With connections I had no issue, when I enabled HDR. At least I thought that. I never used it for long.

But I don't know what banding means.

Maybe I have it too and don't recognize it. How can I find that out?
