I'm currently in the process of deciding whether to go with the M4 Pro 14-Core base model with 24 GB RAM and 512 SSD or get the 12-Core with 48 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD (budget decision pick).

I'm mainly doing usually large Mixing and Mastering sessions with light use of virtual instruments in Pro Tools while also planning to be able to mix Atmos projects in the near future.

My current system has been a 14900K with 64 GB of RAM (I put in 64 GB of RAM because I could, no specific reason behind it).

I've decided to switch back to Mac after almost 10 years when I sold my Mac Pro 5.1 in 2016, because I've tried my friend's M2 Max Studio recently and sessions seemed to run a lot more stable without any playback errors and other issues I tended to have on my Windows machine. Generally the Apple Silicone chips seem to run much more stable than Intel desktop processors.

I've just received the 14-Core M4 Pro base variant and am figuring out whether it'll suffice.

What I've gathered so far, is that the OS uses about 4 GB and Avid's video engine, in case I want to do Atmos, roughly about 8 GB, which with the Sol Levante Netflix Session landed me somewhere around 16 GB of used memory.

However, Sol Levante isn't really plugin heavy so I'll have to customize the session myself a little bit to see if it can take it.

From what it looks like though, 24 GB is doable but running close to it's capacity. Or am I just misreading the activity monitor's statistic?

What's your personal experience?

Do you think I'll be fine with 24 GB in 5 years down the line or will Apple Intelligence (which I'd avoid to use in the OS) and OS usage increase so that I'll have a hard time running projects?

Also, is it worth going for the 14-Core upgrade over the 12? Or is the 12-Core fine?

I'm working natively in Pro Tools Ultimate.

Are there more commercial Pro Tools Atmos sessions available to test?

Difficult to predict, though many people ask similar questions. Including myself.

BTW, the base model of the M4 Max Mac Studio is less expensive than the 48GB version of the non-binned M4 Pro Mac Mini. You also get more ports. However, you only get 36GB of RAM.
