I need to convert a video file to play on my android tablet, is there any way to convert my files from m4v to mp4 for free?

Isn't the difference just the extension...?...I know if it contains an AC-3 track, Apple prefers it to have a .m4v extension but they are both containers of the same format no? Surely you wouldn't have to reencode! :O
