I know the original documentation requires a cd install, but shouldn't this work straight out of the box like the current wireless BT keyboard?

Yeah it'll work fine. The CD was to patch an old OS that didn't already have the drivers built in.

Not sure what the issue was, but on the 6th try it worked.
