LL/A is the 1st iteration of the 1G iPod touch.

LL/B is the 2nd iteration of the 1G iPod touch, these products shipped with the January Software Upgrade pre-installed.

so the B is the 2nd gen? if B is the second gen then is it supposed to have volume buttons as well??

No, /B is the second iteration of the 1st generation iPod touch. It's the 1G product but it shipped with January Software Upgrade as standard.

It's not the 2G iPod touch, as I said, it's the second iteration of the 1G iPod touch.

I guess a follow up question would be then.... what is the 2nd gen model number ?

Ma623ll/b

Can you play it aloud like without headphones? What is the difference between it and a 2nd gen. Thank you so much!

No, it's not a 2nd gen touch. Apple was charging $$$ for the software update to 2.0 which provided access to the App store. The "B" model came with the 2.0 software pre-installed, the "A" model did not, and you had to pay for the software update if you wanted the 2.0 software upgrade. These do not have the internal speaker to allow for "casual" listening.
