Hi,

I have ordered a new 32 inch ultra wide screen and want to use it as a dual monitor setup with my mac 3.1 8 core. Until now i use 2 x 19 inch 1280x1024 screens.

The screen is a xiaomi mi curved gaming monitor (yes thats really the name) with 3440x1440 resolution, 144 hz refresh rate. It has 2 x 1.4 displayports and 2 x 2.0 hdmi ports.

So, since the xiaomi has hardware picture by picture, you can mix between the displayports and hdmi ports. Like i said, i want to use it in dual screen mode with 1720x1440 screens each on its on displayport cable.

Now my mac 3.1 has the ati radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card with dual dvi outputs so that is not gonna work.

I am already searching for a apple certified radeon 5770 graphics card with dual mini 1.2 displayport outputs.
I don't need the monitors high refresh rates, i'm only using it for music production so no need for a beefy new computer and graphics card to get 144 hz, 60 hz will do.

So now my questions,

I know the radeon 5770 in a mac pro 3.1 will support 2560 x 1600 simultaneously on both displayport outputs, so i guess 1720x1440 is (with option key pressed) selectable too? Can someone test that for me?

And, mini displayport to displayport cables... it's a very crowded space with a lot of cables with different specs that seem to not work, what do i have to look for? Really those vesa certified expensive cables? 1.2 cables should be fast enough for my use? Or better go for 1.4 instead?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe it could work with a couple GEFEN Dual Link DVI to Mini DisplayPort converters (I have one of them). https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...l_Link_DVI_to_Mini_DisplayPort_Converter.html
but a new GPU like the Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card would be less expensive.

I don't think there'll be a problem (if the 5770 works). What version of macOS are you using?

DisplayPort 1.2 cables are good enough. VESA certified DisplayPort 1.4 cables are future proof (until DisplayPort 2.0 exists).
