.MAC 5 Compatibility.

Amazon.com is selling .Mac 5.0 And I know there is a newer version of this. But isn't .Mac access to Apples servers? Is there any reason except for fancier box art to get .Mac 6.0 or if you save 21% and just get the old boxes/

Since it's all done on line what's the point of having a display box to begin with, or versioning for that matter unless I am missing something?
