This may sound like a silly question, I am a novice to the Mac family.

I wish to download some of the 'free' apps that are available but when I click on them Apple asks to update my details including credit card details....for something that is advertised as free I just don't understand?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can set up an apple id without a credit card. Just can't pay for paid apps

You need to set up an App Store account in order to download apps, even free apps. You can add your credit card details but you don't have to - just select "None" as the payment method.
