Mac and iCloud Password Problem

I am having an issue with my mac password. I use my iCloud account and password to login to my mac. I recently updated my iCloud password via apples website. However, my mac is still using my old password to login. When I click change password in settings, it prompts me to either unlink my account from iCloud or change my iCloud password (neither of which I want to do). How do I get my mac to update and use my current iCloud password? I wish I could just call apple support about the issue but it looks like they charge $35. What a pain.
