.mac and iphoto web gallery

I recently subscribed to a .mac account. I haven't had any problems creating a web gallery and publishing it on the internet. The problem I am having is downloading the files from the web gallery. The file size of most of my photos in iphoto range between 2-3mb per picture. When my family or I download a picture from the web gallery, the file size is only 500-700kb. With this type of compression it makes it pretty difficult to print a decent looking picture. Is it normal for the web gallery to compress the files?
