A former colleague of mine asked me to help. I've tried (successfully) to stay distant from PC's for so long that I was not sure I could help.

His small office runs on PC's (workstations and laptops). All the office's critical and shared files are on one of the workstations, and shared from there. My colleague's has used an old MBA (running 10.6) to connect to that share during board meetings and such, and it has worked flawlessly. Now he has a new MBA (running 10.9), and the same routine will not work. He tries to connect to smb://IP/share and whatever he enters as username and password, the dialog just wiggles.

I went and had a look in the console logs, but found that this does not leave a line in the logs (at least not one I can distinguish).

I went to help this morning, and neither his MBA (10.9) nor my MBPr (10.10) had any luck in connecting to the share - the same (wiggling) behaviour occurs. Funnily, my old ThinkpadX40 (WXP) had no problem whatsoever (just entering \\IP\share in the "My computer" adress field). More ludicrously, even My MBPr will allow me to connect if I do it via parallels (WXP). It has to be related to MacOS somehow.

I tried the usual workarounds (cifs://IP/share) and forcing smb to use SMB1 - no joy.

I would be very happy if we could find a solution for this persistent problem.
