Mac App Store Icon showing available updates in dock

When there's an update availabe for any Mac App Store app, the dock displays a red "1" above the icon. Can this be turned off? It's very disturbing, since the app store icon is next to the mail icon.

Either update your apps or drag the App Store icon from the dock.
