8. App Cleaner
App removal software like AppCleaner doesn't do a thorough job of removing apps. Read this.
11. Sophos anti virus
Sophos should be avoided, as it could actually increase your Mac's vulnerability, as described here and here.
12. Onyx and clean my mac
One app that I would not recommend, based on the number of complaints that have been posted in this forum and elsewhere, is CleanMyMac. As an example: CleanMyMac cleaned too much

if you go into the mac applications and mac app store forum, you will see plenty threads about software recommendations: https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/2/

Anyways, I'll still put a list of my favorite applications:
Growl
MPlayerX
VLC
Handbrake
Caffeine
Evernote
Firefox or Chrome
Unarchiver

I concur - if you want maintenance utilities one I find useful (and free) is onyx [www.titanium.free.fr]

There are also a couple of other good free apps from the same developer as well.

Other apps that would be useful are:

Default Folder X - [www.stclairsoft.com/DefaultFolderX] adds a number of useful features to the open file window - such as recent folders, favorite folders. Once you use it you'll wonder why Apple didn't already include its features.
Cinch - [http://www.irradiatedsoftware.com] go full screen or half left / right by dragging a window; there's also a free utility, whose name escapes me right now, that makes the green button go full screen
Synk - [www.decimus.net] file sync / backup / archive revisions as you make changes. the first time you accidentally delete a file or your HD barfs you'll be glad you have this. Only $10 for .edu users - well worth it, IMHO
MenuEverywhere - [http://binarybakery.com] allows you to assign mouse buttons to bring to an application's menu at the cursor as well as add a menu bar at the top of a second monitor
TotalFinder - [http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/] adds tabs (and much more) to the finder

google them to get more details.
