my .mac account is expiring and i'm finding little reason to keep it but this new back to my mac feature is intersting ( http://www.apple.com/dotmac/backtomymac.html ) and i want to know how this compares to remote desktop. are they pretty similar? is it work keeping .mac for this if remote desktop can do the same thing?

With LogMeIn you can access your other Mac for free, including its files. Back To My Mac gives you a nice interface for files only, but I think (not certain) that BTMM works when the second Mac is asleep, while the other does not...
