Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook pro (15 inch) that I got before college in 2011. It's processor is 2.2 GHz Icore 7, memory is 4 GB 133MHz DDR3, and Intel graphics 3000 384 MB. Currently running El capitan for the OS. I have recently been running into issues while playing games where the entire screen will go black and it will shut off. It takes a while to start back up as I get the attached screen when rebooting. This only happens when loading up into my online game. It eventually gets to the boot up after 8 to 10 minutes of waiting. It periodically does this. Could it be overhearing since Mac made these macs out of titanium. It gets pretty hot. I know it's an old laptop but been playing on this since my alienware x51s motherboard died. Any ideas? I ran a diagnostics and noting popped up as an issue.

Aluminum, not titanium. The Titanium G4 PowerBooks were much older, 2001-2003 models
You are having symptoms related to failure of the graphics chip, which is a very common issue on 2011 15- and 17-inch Macbook Pros. (Do a search for radeongate)
There are various fixes for that, some work to a point, some just delay the inevitable.

Seconding @DeltaMac here. That sounds like you have an issue with the discrete GPU (Radeon HD 6xxx series). Unfortunately, if we're both right about that, then there's not a whole lot that you can do. There are some guides out there for disabling the discrete graphics (and that does end up resulting in a functional system), but it's a pain and requires a fair amount of either hacking and/or soldering. You're better off selling it for scrap and acquiring a new(er) laptop.

Yep definitely the GPU failing. There are software (and hardware) ways to bypass it. Both are quite complex. I’d start searching for a newer laptop.
