Mac Cinema Display?

I recently bought a used 2005 20" Mac Cinema Display today. he brought his laptop to make sure the display worked and it did. i get home and plug in the outlet, but not into my macbook pro. i don't have the adapter yet.

should the display power up even though it's not connected to computer?, because the light on the lower right doesn't turn on.

in a few hrs. i'm about to head to apple store, so may i please get a answer, for i don't want to buy the mini-display to dvi and still not work.

I bought a new one a few weeks ago and it doent doo anything until my mac's plugged in; power or no power the mac needs to be attached
