Hi all,

I'm interested in your opinion on if a DAC is necessary. I understand that I can get a cable that directly converts my 1/8" jack on my Mac/AirportExpress to RCA inputs to plug into an amplifier. But I also see I could use a DAC to convert the toslink from the AirportExpress to RCA inputs on the amp. Is the DAC "worth it"?

It all depends! If you are after better quality sound reproduction, an external DAC always makes an improvement because the internal DAC is a very basic affair.

In my experience the Audioengine D1 has proved to be one of the best and cost-effective DACs. I'll never go back to using my Mac Pro's standard audio output. It is definitely 'worth it' in my opinion.
