What downloads are free and what are the best to have and why?
I need Excel and Powerpoint just see some files is there anything for Apple besides a 30 day free trial from microsoft?

If you use Excel a lot, just buy Office. In my experience open source apps like NeoOffice and OpenOffice are intolerably slow for spreadsheet stuff.
No idea how their presentation stuff runs though.

But if you only need to use them occasionally, give them a go.

(NeoOffice looks nicer BTW)

NeoOffice - Free pro quality office suite based on OpenOffice. Opens/saves word, excel and powerpoint files. I use it every day for work.

What do you do on your Mac? Neo Office is OK for most Document stuff. Not as polished as MS Office but good enough for most people. But the real question is what you need. Most of the generic stuff is already in OS X all you really need is software that targets what you want to do?
