Mac Equivalent of Nerovision?

A Mac newbie question. Is there an OS-X equivalent of the Nerovision PC program? The immediate program that sprung to mind was iDVD 4 which my new Mac came with however it only appears to recognise Quicktime files for encoding to DVD video format whereas the majority of files I have at present are AVI.. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a Mac equivalent of Nerovision or can suggest a fast convertor to convert AVI > Quicktime in order that I can use iDVD?
