i opened a document in textedit and it still showed the odd font, it has to be a problem on the mac

Open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal, then type in the following and press enter: sudo atsutil databases -remove

Enter your password, then reboot. This will clear the font caches.

When it ask me to enter my password, I cant type anything into the terminal, it wont let me, why?

It lets you type; it just doesn't show anything. Just type in your password and press the enter key.
