Considering that the Mac's graphics cards are now supposed to be virtually identical to the PC's, couldn't Apple just go to Sapphire, or GigaByte and buy some of their cards instead of designing their own?
 
Yes, they could. But why would they? That probably wouldn't make the cards much (if any) better, they would have to give the company a cut of the revenue, and they are obviously capable of doing it by themselves.
 
Apple doesnt make their own graphics cards. They buy them from ATi and nVIDIA

That's only partially true. Apple has a hand in the development.

They only pay to make a compatible version. Everything else is done by the other companies
