Mac HD fills itself up, deleting does not create space, DAMN Safari 4 and crashing!

Ok, I just updated to the new Safari 4 Beta, it crashed during installation and upon restarting all my permissions are dodgy, quicksilver practically reinstalled itself, Safari 4 hangs all the time (even after reinstallation), when I delete files my available disk space is still 3 GB! I could do without doing a fresh install, any recommendations? My time machine is unfortunately at a remote location...

I never use Safari if I can avoid it, it crashes at least half the time just using the current version. Heck, I can't think of the last time I was able to quit, I usually have to force quit it.
