I have a M1 MacBook Air on 15.2 (5 ghz WiFi) and an Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) on 18.2 (Ethernet). If I extend the screen the Mac will disconnect from the Apple TV within anywhere from 3 to 15 seconds. Resolution doesn't seem to matter as it even disconnects at 720p resolution. I can extend my screen to my iPad M4 without issue, it's just the Apple TV that disconnects.

Now if I mirror to my Apple TV from my Mac, it works fine, unless I switch the "Optimize for" setting to Apple TV, then it disconnects. I could swear I could extend previously without issue and my WiFi speeds are over 400 mpbs which should be fast enough to mirror.

Any ideas here?

I'm no expert on AirPlay, but I'd try updating to 15.3.

I noticed there were five security fixes related to AirPlay https://support.apple.com/en-us/122068

Maybe there were other Airplay fixes (non-security related) also, but they just didn't bother mentioning them in the release notes https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-15_3-release-notes.

No mention of fixes in TvOS, but again it wouldn't surprise me if there were fixes not mentioned.. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/tvos-release-notes/tvos-18_3-release-notes

Under the enterprise update notes, it mentioned about AirPlay with the built-in firewall as well as other content filtering (e.g. Endpoint protection software).

AirPlay connects successfully when using the built-in firewall and a content filter extension.

I’m not using MDM.
It might not be limited to MDM enrolled Mac. The macOS built-in firewall seems to be dodgy with macOS Sequoia if you have it enabled. Like in earlier version people had a tough using Time Machine backup because of that. They are in home use setting than work environment.

Do you have an USB-C Ethernet adapter by any chance and connect the MacBook Air to the router or switch?

I do have a USB-C Ethernet adapter, but I haven’t used it as the point is being wireless. If I have to wire my Mac, I might as well just connect to my TV via HDMI.

I've never had much luck with ATV's via Ethernet. They seem to "just work" better using wifi.

Worth a shot?

You said you have "an Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) on 18.2 (Ethernet)"?

If you've tried it on wifi without good results, then so be it.
