I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo; about 4? years old by now; got it just after Intel Macs became available. Have had Snow Leopard for a few months. Keyboard is less than a year old; mouse about 1-2 years old.
The problem has been happening last day or so, and by now about every half hour or less.
The mouse stops responding, but the first few times I could still use the keyboard, and was able to get the mouse going again by removing the USB and replacing it.
Then it started to happen that the keyboard would go as well, and replacing the USB, or even putting it into a different socket no longer helped.
Then, when I had restarted the computer (for third or fourth time) I only had chrome and openoffice open, while watching eyetv, and eyetv suddenly stopped, plus lost input on mouse and keyboard again.
Most of the time, eyetv was off; it was only on the last time it happened.
Prior to that I had firefox and chrome open, plus openoffice, and skype (which is generally on by default)
The iMac is the oldest component - all the accessories are more recent.
Is it something in the iMac that may need repair or replacing?
