Mac lags when rading pdf

I dont know if anybody else has this issue but my mac starts lagging when i open up pdf files. What ever i use to open it up either preview or adobe acrobat/reader it lags when scrolling or searching for something i n the pdf. has anybody else had this issue if yes how can i fix it. I am running snow leopard. Thanks
