Hello.

I am a technician at a local computer store. We mainly work on PCs, but have the occasional iMac.

Recently we have run into various issues involving broken filesystems, wont boot, etc. All of the technicians here are fairly knowledgeable with PCs, but nearly blind when it comes to Macs. I am trying to bridge that gap, as we are seeing more and more Macs come in for repair.

I was posting this to ask if there are any tools/guides utilities that we could use to optimize our workflow.

Specifically, I am looking for Bootable media that I can pop in the Mac to grab Customer Data, Settings, Diag info, etc. It would be awesome if it had advanced OS and FileSystem tool to help repair broken installs. I would also like a legitimate and reliable way to reinstall the Mac OS, including download the ISOs. (DMGs?)

Personally, I have moderate experience in Linux based commands, playing around with Mac Terminal occasionally. I have access to a machine running 10.7, and could use that to learn.

One last thing. Where should I go should I run into issues, like my current one: The OS partition is broken and cannot be repaired after 3 attempts. Disk Utility tells me to backup data and reinstall. Is D.U. dependable? or just a basic weak program Apple threw on there?
