Mac Mail and thread management

for some reason, in Mac mail, it is combine 2 threads. most of the time the threads are from the same email group (I am on a lot), but the subjects are different. any way to brake the 1 thread into 2? I also have the problem of threads not combining. anyone know how to group those threads together.
