Mac Mail in a loop. "Cannot send mail - select outgoing server"

Mac Mail is in a loop. A small window opens: "Cannot send mail - select outgoing server" and opens another same window and another.... I have restarted etc. Still looping. I was thinking of switching to Mail so I could sync with my other Apple devices and had started to set it up. Returning from holiday I reopened Mail and this happened. I have in between time upgraded to El Capitan. Any help appreciated.
