Mac Mail Issue (Freezing/Crashing/odd behavior periodically)

I am running a late 2015 iMac on Catalina. Periodically Mail freezes -- or should I say starts acting odd. For example, if I click on a message nothing happens, or if I click a couple of time it will highlight a message other than the one I am clicking on. Left magic mouse swipe won't work and if I try to delete something with the delete key, it either doesn't work or it does nothing when I hit the delete key and then deletes the message when I subsequently click the mouse. If I quit the program or close using the "x" and reopen it generally starts working normally again. Additionally, sometimes when the app is closed it will take two click rather than one to open.

This has been going on for a fairly long time and I can't seem to notice any pattern as to when it occurs.

Any ideas or suggestions for things to try to fix it?
