OK, I'm having an annoying problem with my .mac account, and the .mac support forums aren't a bit helpful (as usual).

Anyway, here's the problem: I just moved into my dorm room, and now sending mail through .mac just plain doesn't work anymore. What happens is this: I try to send a message, it stalls at "Connecting to smtp.mac.com", and then a minute or so later it shows the original message with a sheet attached to it telling me to try and send it later or with a different SMTP account. The settings for the .mac are exactly the same as they were before the move to my dorm room.

I've used .mac here at Stanford for 2 years running, so I don't understand why this isn't working.

Here's the other thing -- over at the .mac support forums, they mention in OTHER threads ( ) that you should disable SMTP authentication for .mac accounts. Funny, because I've always had that turned on. So I go into the Accounts preference pane of Mail's preference window, double-click on my .mac account's entry, click "Options..." for the SMTP server, and then delete my password in that window, and set Authentication to "None".

However, if I click "OK" twice (to confirm the changes to the SMTP server and then to the account), and then go back and edit the SMTP server settings, the password is back and my SMTP server authentication is back to "Password"! ARG!

Anybody know any fixes for this problem? I really want to keep my accounts separate and not have to use my Stanford e-mail for sending mail that I receive through .mac.
