When I send 1 email to 1 recipient from my gmail account on mac mail, the mail activity monitor on the bottom left indicates that I am sending 2, 3 or as many as 5 emails. It takes a long time to send when this happens. It only happens when I send from the gmail account and never from my other accounts. I have no "extra" mail in my sent folder. Is someone else sending email from my computer? Thank you kindly for any help.

That does not sound too unusual especially if you have your Gmail set up as IMAP. It must sync the emails you are viewing via the Mail client with what is on the server. This applies to sent messages and messages you move to other folders. You can try to adjust the option in Mailbox Behaviors for your Gmail IMAP account and set it to not store sent messages on the server and see if that makes any difference.
