Mac Mail vs. iPhone Mail

I have a gmail account that forwards to both my Mac Mail and my iPhone and I get duplicate messages. Is there any way to configure either of those so that when I read a message it will mark it as read on the server and I won't get a duplicate? I know this is a minor annoyance at best.

Make sure that G-Mail is set to have IMAP on (in the preferences in the G-mail web page) and then erase the account off the iPhone. Re-add it, but don't use the "g-mail" option when adding. Pick the "other" and add it again as an IMAP account.
