Mac mail will not sync with gmail

Afternoon

When i delete a message in mac mail it does not delete it from my gmail account, but when i delete a message on my iphone4 it does delete it from my gmail account. I cannot understand why i cannot get it to work in the same way?

I hope somebody can help me with this annoying problem
