Mac Mail zipping folders

I've been told recently that whenever I attach a folder to an email, and send it a non-Mac user on the other end, that folder I attached has been zipped and causes problems and hassle at the other end.

Is there any way to stop Mac Mail, from zipping a folder?

Am running OSX 10.9.1 and Mac Mail 7.1
