Mac: Messenger Spell Check Not working

Hi, i am sorry if this has been answered already, but i am having trouble with my mac messenger. It use to check spelling all the time but, lately it has stopped and i cant find the option to turn it on. Can you guys please help me? I am currently using a Macbook Pro on Snow leopard

There seems to be an incompatability with snow leopard and messenger for mac. On my machine, it initially works, but then the "check spelling while typing" preference becomes unchecked, and the whole menu is grayed out so that you cannot fix it.

Honestly, I don't know why no one else seems to be bothered by this.

I have the same problem. Solved it by heading to taskbar. look for edit ->spelling-> check spelling as you type.
