Decided to update my mac mini 2010 with a $34 500GB HP SSD to play with OCLP OS install past High Sierra. last reason was that the original HD crashed, despite trying to repair, remained not bootable but I was able to pull all info from the HD.
Now the OWC and MaxFixIt videos really shall have a warning about the IR sensor wire socket, which I have like many others dislodged from the motherboard. I just superglued it back hoping that some wire continuity will get me the sleep light, but no, and I can be without it.
I had difficulty with the black wrap around the HD, really adherent, but removed at the end.
Then the video shows the guy just to lift the temp sensor easily but while doing it with one of the HD sensors, it broked in 2 :-(
I left it attached on the SSD, with the second one, but I have now the full fan speed. I downloaded Macs Fan Control and was able to slow the fan.
Shall I stop here ? The new sensor with wire is like $12 shipped.
Why the HD has TWO sensors ?
If one is still working, why the fan trouble ?
On the broken one, can I just short the 2 wires and this will give the right signal to the Mac?
Lastly, if I get the new one, does it NEED to go on the SSD as the videos show? I would prefer just to plug it in the socket and leave it around, maybe taped, instead disassembling the drive again.
