Hi,

I have a router in the next room and I use it since 3 years without any issue. I have a 100 MBit/sec internet connection with really good and stable transfer rates (can proove it with windows PC, iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire TV), so in short: I never had any issues.

Three days ago I purchased a Mac Mini 2018 in standard setting (128 GB, 8GB Ram, i3). Wifi is so slow, that I now use an ethernet cable.

Anyone else having the same issues? I found a lot online. I do not have any usb hub or anything special connected. Only normal usb mouse and keyboard.

Thanks for all suggestions.

I can get a 1200 Mbit physical connection. But it works best, if there is a line of sight. As the antenna window is at the bottom and the rest of the Mac mini is made of metal, proper positioning is important.

Thats funny. I have a wooden table, maybe not the best for wifi signals...

Thanks for the hint. I will try to play around with positioning, but I am not very flexible since the router is in the next room and I need my desk :D

Try to get a repeater and position it near the Mac mini. It should improve things.

It's also funny, that right now I am having a 14 Mbit connection...which is crazy slow... so it's really temperamental...after a reconnect it is 1.300 Mbit again...

Alt-Click onto the Wifi icon in the menu bar to get this information.

Most likely, I will try to get a wifi usb stick with a good antenna. I do not like the repeater idea, since a repeater always consumes power and takes up at least one power socket...

I know the alt info. It says 144 MBit/s, but I am pretty sure those numbers are theoretically, because with other devices I can view netflix and full hd youtube, but here it took me about 10 minutes to download 80 MBytes...

But anyway I have to experiment with positioning. Maybe I turn it on its head :D

OP:

Seems to me this issue was mentioned here at macrumors just yesterday.

The "workaround" is a bit clunky -- that is, add a 3rd-party external USB wifi adapter. But what works... works.

However... if you're connected via ethernet AND getting the speeds you want (via ethernet)... you might just consider "letting it be". It's not like you're going to be carrying the Mini around. And one can "learn to live with" the ethernet cable on the floor.

Is your router running at 5Ghz or 2.4? Dual band? It is most likely your router not outputting quality signal on a congested network and possibly the MM2018 is more sensitive to this. Try setting your router to 5Ghz only (as an experiment), connect the Mini, and see what speeds you get.

Basically, I have an old MBP 2010, 2 Desktop computers with different Wifi solutions, 3 Windows Notebooks and now the MacMini and the MacMini is the only computer which has a nearly unusable wifi speed.

But anyhow, I now went with the USB adapter solution. I use now a TP Link TL-WN823N V2 adapter with the latest V3 drivers together with an USB hub. Since the MacMini has more than enough ports, using the adapter is not an issue for me.

Thanks for all answers, for me this issue is solved now.
