Yes, I was looking at the i3 model. I like the idea of the i5, but in Canada that starts at $1,399. The i3 starts at $999, and I have the option to buy the 2018 version of the i3 for $850. I'm not sure if that i5 is worth $550 more than the i3 with a 128GB SSD.

I'm open to suggestions though.

The 128Gb version has slower storage than the 256Gb version. I would pay the extra and get the 256Gb version. If you had the budget for it I'd consider sinking more the storage if you can as you can't upgrade that after purchase.

The larger the SSD the faster it is but 128gb is still going to be plenty fast. You will get a write speed of around 600MB/s and at least 2GB/s read, that is not slow. On the 256GB SSD you will get 1.3GB/s write. We are talking un-noticeable differences to most on write speed.

Also, remember that you have 4 Thunderbolt ports offering 40Gbps so if you needed more storage later you can easily add a very small external 256GB SSD for less than $100. It may not be the most elegant options but you can easily increase both disk and ram these days if needed.

madmic --

If there's any way you can pay a little more for at least a 256gb SSD, I don't think you're going to regret doing so.

One -can- run the Mini with the 128gb SSD, but there's MUCH more breathing room by increasing that to 256gb...

Just fired out my new Mac mini for the first time and found out about this "2020" thing. I'm curious now what will happened to my support. Especially now, when Apple silicon is on the way, Rosseta 2 etc. Hope Apple will not cut 2 years of my support 😶

You'll be fine, support ends 5 years after they discontinue it, not when it was launched. Anyone who bought a 2018 mini in 2018 will find that the clock only starts ticking on support when Apple replace it with an ARM model.

This is why the 2014 model will have a very long life because they only stopped selling those in 2018 and hence anything with Haswell Iris Graphics will likely get OS support till 2023. This is good news for those still rocking 2013 MacBook Pros.

And don't forget Apple will probably still produce security patches for OSes for 2 versions after it's no longer the current OS.

When Big Sur launches, people still on Mojave can expect security patches until the successor to Big Sur comes out.

This week I moved from a 2013 Mac Pro (cylinder) to a “2020” i5 Mac Mini.

No regrets whatsoever.

Agree... I moved from a nMP6.1 12core, 64gb of ram, dual D700 to a MM 2018 i5 with an eGPU.

It's awesome and blazing fast in all application than my previous macpro. Really really satisfied.

Apple did make these new models, not “2020” but they did market them as the “new” tag when they added more capacity to base models. They have new SKUs.
