ok that will work, but as I have owned an Apple TV, what other things will I be missing if I decide to go with the mac mini?

Guys,

Will I be able to make a Mac mini work the same as an Apple TV?

You will be able to play/watch your media through Front Row and iTunes on the Mac Mini but menu and general design of the interface is different and not like the Apple TV at all. The AppleTV uses HDMI which creates a HDCP connection to your TV, not sure but I don't think you can create a HDCP connection between your Mac Mini and TV. Just something to remember when planning for HD content.

He can do DVI to HDMI.

If I could do it again, I would have purchased a Mini instead of the ATV. The ATV is too crippled to me. I have it hooked up to my projector. I don't rent movies from the iTunes music store, I rarely stream movies from my Mac. I have Boxee installed on the ATV, but it can easily be installed on a Mini. I would rather have the functionality of a full OSX machine rather than a crippled interface of the ATV.

As far as HDMI, just use a DVI to HDMI coverter. I have a drawer full of them. diNovo Mini from Logitech and you are set.

I'm sure there are many many threads about this same subject. Have a look around.
