I'm running a 2007 mac mini as a media center and have it hooked up to my surround sound system. I also have my ps3 hooked up to the same audio system. The problem is, my surround sound only decodes Dolby digital (AC3) and PCM and won't even touch DTS or newer HD codecs like DTS-HD master audio or Dolby True-HD.

I noticed plex on my mini recodes DTS one outputs it as AC3 to my amp, is there any apps that could take the audio signals from my ps3 (optical input) and transcode them to AC3 on the fly and with little lag to let me listen to DTS and HD audio streams in multichannel audio (optical out)?

The mini started out as a 1.6GHz core duo, now it's got a 2.0GHz core duo and I've just ordered a T7200 2.0GHz 64bit core2duo for it.

There may be some software that can do this, but I would imagine it would introduce latency and be a general headache to deal with. You'd probably be better off buying a DAC (Digital Audio Converter) for fairly cheap that could do this for you.
