When I open my MacBook Air M2 (Ventura) from sleep, the display opens with a full-size window. When I open my Mac mini M2 Pro/Studio display (Ventura) from sleep, the display opens with a laptop-size window in the lower left corner that instantly pops to a full-size window. Is anyone else seeing this? If yes, does anyone know what causes it?

With further experience, it appears the issue noted in my OP only happens when I wake my Mac mini by tapping the Magic Trackpad. When I wake the computer by tapping a key on the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID it wakes to a full screen. I do't know why tapping the track pad gives a different result, but it does.

Eyewitness testimony can often be unreliable! My studio display did it again this morning after I used my keyboard to wake it. I tried again, re-awakening it with the keyboard about thirty seconds after I poked Sleep, and it opened to a full screen. Maybe the time it has been sleeping has something to do with the behavior.

As a second source of observation, my wife also purchased a Mac mini M2 with a studio display, and hers is doing the same thing. Her Mac mini has a regular chip, so the behavior is probably not related to the type of M2 chip. Our Intel iMacs never did this.

I'm trying a new experiment. I set the screen lock period to five minutes. Instead of sleeping my Mac mini M2 Pro, I just walk away from it. It sleeps itself after five minutes. When I come back, in an hour or the next morning, I touch the space bar. So far, it seems to open to a full screen.

I am surprised no one seems to be having this issue with the Mac mini M2 or M2 Pro besides me. So far, I have been able to solve my problem by reducing my Studio Display brightness level to about the 25% level and leaving the display and Mac mini to go to sleep by themselves. I have the Lock Screen set for five minutes, so they sleep pretty quickly. When I come back, even the next day, the screen comes on to the same full-size desk top as when I left it.
