Need some help on getting my first Mac Mini. I’m coming from a 2012 MacBook Pro with 8GB Ram/512GB SSD (which still runs great, I just want to move to a newer Mac)

This unit will 90% be used for music production on Logic Pro X. I’m not a professional, I just make demos for my band. But I am upgrading my home studio to get some nicer stuff to learn on (hence the new Mac). I do have a variety of plugins I use and plan to get. The other 10% will be for just basic web browsing and maybe some small video editing on Adobe, and mainly just storing “business files” for my band

Here’s where I’m at… I’ve got to keep myself around that $800ish range (i can use the student discount). I know for sure I want to make the jump to 16GB RAM.

So I’m trying to figure out if I should:

-Get a brand new M2 with 16GB/256SSD and use an external SSD with it (I’ve heard the 256SSD on the M2 is much slower than the M1 and the other M2‘s, and that adding an external SSD would make that worse).

-Get a used/refurbished M1 from Apple for around the same price but with 16GB/512SSD AND also run an external SSD if I use up the 512GB (My only concern with this is the M1 already being 3 years old)

Any help is appreciated !

With the m2 (non-pro) Mini, the 512gb SSD is 2x as fast as the 256gb SSD.

That could make a difference to you.

And... 16gb RAM is the minimum you should consider.
