I am having a problem getting Lion installed on my mac mini. I just purchased it and it is running 10.5.

I used my MBP to copy the Lion installer file to a usb stick earlier and successfully upgraded my other MBP from the usb stick so I know it's good.

When I try to boot up from the usb stick the screen goes black which may be related to the fact that is connected by hdmi.

My only other option is to boot up normally and trying to install lion from the usb stick that way the problem is there is a circle with a line over the lion image and when I try to open it is gives me an error message about unsupported architecture... any ideas?

You need to be running OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Also, what are the specs on your mini? Processor specifically.

You have to be running snow leopard even if you are not trying to install in through the app store?

It's a core 2 dou so it is supported.

Yep. Apple says you need the latest version of Snow Leopard. I'm not sure of any other way around that.
