Mac Mini - Possible Hard Drive Corruption

I've been noticing many things that would suggest this....

- unresponsive to certain actions I try to take
- Apps close for no reason
- external Apple disc drive won't work

I've spoke with Apple support regarding hte drive issue and they suggested reinstalling OS, which I've done. They said if that didn't fix it then we could Erase and reinstall. Does this fix corrupted drive issues if I do that?
